Safe & Sound Protocol

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based listening therapy designed to reduce sound sensitivities and improve auditory processing, behavioral state regulation, and social engagement behaviors. The SSP involves listening to specially filtered music with provider support and direction, either in-person or remotely.

As a practical application of Polyvagal Theory, the SSP acts as a non-invasive, acoustic vagal nerve stimulator. It can help re-tune the nervous system to better support connection, collaboration and resilience and it is recommended for those with heightened sensitivities to environmental stimuli. In particular, the system can be helpful to individuals who have difficulty regulating their autonomic nervous system in order to relax, self-soothe or engage socially due to feeling anxious or unsafe. It has been used to support both children and adults with anxiety, ASD, ADHD, or a history of trauma, and is facilitated by professionals working in mental health, trauma therapy, occupational therapy, education and school counseling settings.

Using SSP requires the ability to download and use the myunyte app on your phone or computer. You will also need access to over the ear headphones which do not include noise cancellation (or which allow this function to be turned off). Your therapist will provide detailed information about use of the SSP program if it is of interest to you. You can learn more about SSP here:
